Overcoming Imposter Syndrome and Leading Your Team to Tame the Boring Beasts You’ve Outgrown

Do you ever feel like a fraud in your role as a leader? Like you’ve somehow fooled everyone into thinking you’re competent, when deep down, you feel like you’re not up to the task?

If so, you’re not alone.

Imposter syndrome is a common experience among high-achieving individuals, especially those in leadership positions.

But what is imposter syndrome, and how can you overcome it?

Let’s explore imposter syndrome and offer you some tips for managing it, as well as how you can lead your team with confidence so they can tackle the boring tasks you’ve outgrown.

First, let’s define imposter syndrome.

It’s a psychological phenomenon that affect women at a disproportionate rate to men- making the individual doubt their skills, accomplishments, and abilities, despite evidence to the contrary. (I like to say imposter syndrome is like breast cancer, and while it can affect men, it’s mainly a women’s issue.)

This self-doubt can be paralyzing, causing individuals to feel like they’re frauds who will be exposed as soon as they make a mistake.

So, how can you overcome imposter syndrome and lead your team to success?

Here are a few tips:

  1. Recognize and name your imposter syndrome ( I call mine Piper because she’s alway “piping in” when I don’t want to hear from her.) By acknowledging that imposter syndrome is a common experience, you can begin to separate yourself from it and see it as a challenge to overcome, rather than a reflection of your worth.

  2. Share your experience with others. Talking to others about your imposter syndrome can help you realize that you’re not alone, and that many high-achievers feel the same way. It can also help you receive support and encouragement from those around you.

  3. 3. Tame the inner critic. The inner critic is that little voice inside your head that tells you you’re not good enough. By learning to recognize and challenge this voice, you can begin to reframe your thoughts and beliefs about your abilities.

  4. Celebrate your successes. Take the time to acknowledge your accomplishments, no matter how small they may seem. Celebrating your successes can help you build confidence and resilience, which are essential for managing imposter syndrome.

  5. Lead your team through the boring tasks. As a leader, you’re responsible for managing the team through the boring tasks that you’ve outgrown. To do this effectively, you need to communicate the importance of the task, break it down into manageable chunks, and reward your team for their hard work.

As you can see, imposter syndrome is a common experience among high-achieving women, and it can be managed and overcome with the right mindset and strategies.

By recognizing and naming your imposter syndrome, sharing your experience with others, taming the inner critic, celebrating your successes, and leading your team through the boring tasks, you can overcome imposter syndrome and lead your team to success.

Now that you know how to overcome imposter syndrome and lead your team through the boring tasks, it’s time to put these strategies into action and reach for the stars!
